X11 developer updates?

Since I occasionally compile my own X11 programs, I was wondering if there are any updates outside the X11.app beta distribution that I should try to use, such as headers, libraries, etc., and what would be the best approach for me to update those. Or should I stick with the stock Apple development libraries. I think my X11 development environment is from the 10.5-X11 Developer distribution + 10.5.4 + 10.5.5 updates. TIA Dave

xpbproxy is a pasteboard proxy. It allows copying and pasting text and images between X11 and Mac applications. *Please see the included README.txt for testing and installation instructions.* Changes since the X11-2.3.2_beta2.pkg release: 1. PICT support has been added, so applications that set only the PICT clipboard type should now work with paste in X11 apps. 2. Copy and paste with Nedit works. 3. Copy and paste with Eterm works (see below). Eterm has 3 bugs which have been worked around in the TARGETS property that it sends. The first bug is that it sets the TARGETS property type to TARGETS instead of ATOM; which is not ICCCM compliant. The 2nd is that it mishandles the size of the TARGETS list. Thus, the Atoms are being sent as a series of 8-bit quantities, which will not work if say the server and client are running on different endian systems. The 3rd bug is that in some cases the list of TARGET atoms may be incorrect from Eterm, from truncated values. It's sending 16 bits of data for what should be 64 (2 Atoms). xpbproxy attempts to detect and work around the bugs. You did it! xpbproxy Oct 29 release I can copy and paste both directions between X11-Gimp and Preview, Photoshop and any OS-X graphics program. I can copy and paste both directions between TextEdit and X11-Eterm, X11-xterm I noticed a very minor anomaly with copy-paste between xterm and Eterm . If I highlight text in an xterm window, then switch to an Eterm window and click mouse button-2, the text pastes as expected. But if I de-select the text in xterm before pasting in Eterm, I get nothing. The highlighted text in xterm will paste to Textedit, whether or not the text was de-selected first. Going the other way - Copying highlighted text from Eterm and pasting into xterm acts normal, pasting works whether or not the text is de-selected first. Thanks again for looking at the copy-paste issues with Eterm, I'll try to pass on your feedback to the developers. Dave

2.3.2-beta2: Spaces bugs

Is this a known X11/Spaces bug: 1. open a couple of Xterms (or anything else X) using the X11 Applications menu (mine are customised, don't think this should matter). May not even matter how you open them. 2. move one to a new space (I use my designated function key, F12 on this MacBook Air Keyboard, it isn't the default, to get the "Spaces Map" and drag the xterm with the mouse to a new Space). 3. use the X11 window menu to choose the xterm in a different Space to the current one, so you switch to that Space. 4. Now use ^-> or ^<- (ctrl-right or left arrow) to move to an adjacent Space. Only you don't, you move to the Space adjacent to the one the previous xterm was in. Spaces hasn't noted the X11 induced Space switch. OTOH, RetroOffice finally seems to be willing to allow its windows to be moved between Spaces. Previously, trying to select a moved window would flip you back to the original Space it was launched in. Many thanks! I was editing some files with fink's version of emacs and using xfig. At some moment all x11-windows became nonresponsive. After a minute of successless trying to click it etc. I killed it, just after i got the attached from 'activity monitor/control'. Any advise? any add'l info that i should provide? Also, I tried to downgrade to 2.3.1, but that crashes now upon each start (didn't do so before). best Sven de Vries

I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0, a.k.a. "low end" or "poor man's" Photoshop. Maybe that's why there's no TIFF in the pasteboard. I compiled the NSPasteboard_types app at your request and ran it to report the Pasteboard file types. Modifier keys don't work (with 3-btn emulation disabled)

I followed along earlier in the 2.3.1_beta threads about the modifier keys and 3-button emulation. I'm pretty sure at the time that this was working for me, but now, running 2.3.2_beta2, I'm unable to get any modifiers to be applied to button clicks (like trying to shift-click to multi-select things in XFCE's file manager, for example). And button clicks in xev look the same regardless what modifiers I have pressed. I've got: "enable_fake_buttons" = 0; "enable_key_equivalents" = 1; in my org.x.x11 prefs. Is there anything else I should check for that might be messing things up? Is anyone else seeing this behavior? Thanks, - Brian

On the topic of copy-paste, I want to give an update for the latest betas on my system. I can copy and paste both directions between Textedit and xterm. I can copy and paste both directions with X11-Gimp and Preview. I continue to have unusual copy-paste behavior between X11-Gimp and Adobe Photoshop, Results are the same as I described from the previous version. I can copy from Gimp to Photoshop, but not the other way. I can copy from Photoshop to Preview fine and Preview to Gimp fine. I continue to have unusual copy-paste behavior between X11-Eterm and anything othe than Eterm. Results are the same as I described from the previous version. Seems like they use different buffers. Under Linux I use a mix of xterm and Eterm and never saw this problem. Let me know if there's any info I can collect that could be useful. Dave
