About pbproxy ------------- pbproxy is an application that transfers selections to/from X11 and the Mac pasteboard/clipboard. It supports copying strings, such as UTF-8, Latin-1, and Compound text. In addition to those, there is support for image copying, so you can copy images to/from the X11 Gimp (and other X11 applications that support image copying) and Mac applications. There is also support for copying and pasting very large amounts of data that used to previously fail. Changes since release 11 --------------------- 13 - Thu Sep 25, 2008 Remove the backup files from the distribution that I mistakenly left when building the tarball. Add a release_checklist.txt and the interactive test suite to the tests directory. --------------------- 12 - Thu Sep 25, 2008 I fixed the STRING property, so that now rxvt can copy/paste, as well as other apps that only support the Latin-1/STRING. I fixed the usage of the NSString cStringUsingEncoding: - it doesn't NUL terminate the string, which lead to a bus error in some cases. So, we use lengthOfBytesUsingEncoding: to get the length in bytes instead of strlen(). Add a -force option to ./install.sh. FYI, MacPorts built gtk now supports xinput, so macports installed gimp should almost work with tablets. I installed the pbproxy package on my system, which runs Enlightenment window manager and does not use quartz-wm. Wanted to give some feedback. I used install.sh, the behavior of copy/paste was the same as before the installer. I ran top at the terminal to see what was running, and pbproxy was not running. So I just ran it by hand: sudo pbproxy & And then all the copy-paste operations worked great. I'm not sure how the installer intended to set up pbproxy to run, but you might want to adjust the installer so pbproxy runs even when there's a different window manager being used. Text copied fine between Textedit and the terminal, graphics copied fine between Preview and Gimp. I did not test RTF text. What I did test worked perfectly. Hooray! One issue to note with X11.app, the Copy and Paste commands in the OS- X menu, when X11.app is in front, Paste is still greyed out when there is a clipboard buffer. I could paste using the X11 app's own separate menu, but I could not hit command-V. Is this bug documented? On my system, I choose not to run quartz-wm at all, so all I really need to do is add pbproxy to my .xinitrc: source /etc/bashrc pbproxy & exec /usr/local/bin/e16 If pbproxy ends up embedded in another binary, I'll just take out the 2nd line. Hope this feedback is useful. Let me know if you see any issues with my setup or if you want more info. Dave

These can be used (and potentially modified) in shell RC files by using the defaults command, which allows to read from the file. A change in ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist then shows up in the next shell created. To me ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist is like the primal meter bar at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures in Sèvres, France. It's a single point of failure, and it's the single file that I need to edit for a change. I found a simple, stupid solution; since I use tcsh, I just started putting "tcsh -c '<command>'" in my X11 Applications menu. Then the command inherits the full environment of my default shell, and I don't have to worry about it. OK, I finally got around to testing this comprehensively on my system (10.5.5 and X11 2.3.1). Here's what I did, in detail: 1) I created a file .MacOSX/environment.plist containing two environment variables (TESTVARIABLE and TESTVARIABLE2). 2) In the X11 Applications menu, I created two entries: 'xterm -ls', and 'env > /tmp/X11_env.txt'. 3) I created an applescript in Script Editor containing the single line: do shell script "env > /tmp/Applescript_env.txt; cd $HOME; /usr/X11/ bin/xterm -ls" 4) I logged out and logged back in. Test 1: Launching from a Terminal 1) I opened a Terminal window. 'env | grep TEST': positive 2) In the terminal window, I typed 'xterm -ls' to open an xterm. In the resulting xterm, 'env | grep TEST': positive 3) Created a new xterm from the X11 Applications menu. In the resulting xterm, 'env | grep TEST': NEGATIVE 4) Created the /tmp/X11_env.txt file from the X11 Applications menu. 'grep TEST /tmp/X11_env.txt: NEGATIVE Test 2: Launching from Applescript 1) Opened Script Editor and ran the Applescript from there. (I could also save it as an Application; makes no difference.) 2) In the resulting xterm: 'env | grep TEST': positive 3) Created a new xterm from the X11 Applications menu. In the resulting xterm, 'env | grep TEST': NEGATIVE 4) Created the /tmp/X11_env.txt file from the X11 Applications menu. 'grep TEST /tmp/X11_env.txt: NEGATIVE 5) 'grep TEST /tmp/Applescript_env.txt: positive Test 3: Launch from the Utilities directory. 1) Launched X11 from the Utilities directory. This opened X11 and an xterm. 2) In the resulting xterm: 'env | grep TEST': positive 3) Created a new xterm from the X11 Applications menu. In the resulting xterm, 'env | grep TEST': positive 4) Created the /tmp/X11_env.txt file from the X11 Applications menu. 'grep TEST /tmp/X11_env.txt: positive I don't have an .xinitrc file. Hi, Unfortunately the last release had some memory leaks, in object usage and INCR transfers. I don't like this solution because we're essentially adding in extra symlinks for no "real" reason except to support other libtool-archive files. I'm sorry, but the "broken" .la files being shipped with Xcode will be removed as was mentioned about 2 months ago. Xquartz.pkg will continue to ship the .la files to allow macports and fink users an alternative. You've seen how long it's taken to get substantial X11 updates into an OS update, so it seems like a battle not worth waging to try getting this kind of change into an OS update.
