2.4.0_beta4 and beta5

So... I have "two" releases to announce right now. 2.4.0_beta4 comes at you with the last of the blockers fixed (I think): freetype was fixed to allow fork()ing apps. multi-monitor support has been improved (duplicate visuals have been removed). cleaned up some more GLX code Steam windows run through wine should now participate in Exposé and support for automatic updates through Sparkle has been added... xmodmap race is fixed beta5 is essentially identical to beta4 except for its version number... This difference is in place to test out Sparkle. I'm able to perform an update when I trigger it manually here, but the automatic update seems to not be working right now... I'd like everyone testing this to just install beta4 and hopefully beta5 will eventually appear as an update option. I'd like some feedback about that over the next few days. Hi Everybody Jeremy, thanks for answer I will profile the hack on Leopard with latest X11 to see the bottleneck. Meanwhile I can right away name the main X11 API that's drives this hack - it's XCopyArea - previously it was specifically accelerated. The source and destination are the same window, that's why theoretically this hack should be very fast - we take pixels from window and copy them in the same window. P.S. XCopyArea emulation (window->window) is the major bottleneck for pure OS X port as well btw because there is no low level API in OS X that can do such blits. Best regards, Platon

2.4.0. rc1

Jeremy, I did install 2.4.0.rc1 - works fine on my macbook air :-) I compared the X11.bin file and it is different from the single one on the mirror and what comes with the 2.4.0.rc1 package, the latter is 3.4 MB the single X11.bin...-apple12 is 2.3 MB. Hi everybody Just want to ask Jeremy about some of my concerns linked to the bug http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/261#comment:8. In the bug there is a comment: If your issue is that it is only at 7fps, then that is another issue entirely... and it's most likely a fallout from rlAccel being removed. That is something that will hopefully be addressed in a new EXA driver for 2D performance gains. Does it basically mean that graphics sensitive utilities like Gimp will significantly suffer from rlAccel removal? I rely on Gimp for my work and if it will be 3-4 times slower it's like a major disaster. Thanks in advance. Platon.

In my case the issue was that I didn't know that the Installer was running because it didn't come to focus until after I quit X11. (It had launched behind it.)

It's been about 2 months since the last release (2.3.3.2), and I hope it has been worth the wait. 2.4.0 is finally ready to enter rc status. I'm fairly confident that it is in a production-ready state, but I want a wider audience to begin using it for the next week or so before I give it the gold stamp. 2.4.0 introduces a bunch of fixes and feature requests that have been pending for a while including: * Automatic updates * linking issues with libOSMesa * fork()ing issues with libfreetype * Auto-quit support via quartz-wm * misc Xorg packages updated to the latest releases * Stabilization of and transition to the 1.5.x server branch (which includes improved AIGLX support). http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/X11-2.4.0_rc1.dmg A more detailed ChangeLog is here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.4.0 === Testing Automatic Updates === This past week, beta users were testing the automatic updates feature in X11, and I think all the kinks have been worked out. If you'd like to test the automatic updates, you can do so by "tricking" X11 into thinking it's outdated. To do so, edit /Applications/Utilities/ X11.app/Contents/Info.plist and change CFBundleVersion to a lover value (like 2.4.0). When you restart X11, you can goto "X11->Check for Updates..." and you should be able to "update" to the newer version. === Known Issues === The automatic updates don't give you an "Are you sure you want to quit?" dialog before restarting. Sparkle

So, there was a parse error in the xml file for sparkle, so the 2.4.0_beta5 update probably never appeared. I fixed the parse error ("<title" instead of "<title>" ><) and you should all see the popup sometime in the next day or so (I think Sparkle rechecks every 24 hours). The automatic update has one issue that I don't like... while doing the install, you can not use X11.
