Yeah, they are executables. They should be text files containing X resource specifications for the similarly named programs. Sorry I wasn't more clear.

I presume it happened because the X server was built on simple (old standard) HFS+: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8432. Because in this file system the files "name" and "Name" cannot exist both, a lot of X clients are installed in app-defaults. -- Greetings ~ O Pete ~~_\\_/% ~ O o
