I updated today to OS 10.5.4 and the problem described below disappeared. I then installed X11 2.3.0-rc4, X11-1.4.2-apple2, and Xquartz-1.4.2-apple2 on top and here it is again. On Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 9:57 AM, John Koren <jpkoren@gmail.com> wrote:
I am sorry for all this traffic, but I must retract my last comment. The problem is present also under "Safe Boot", with no other applications running.

I just rebooted in "safe mode" and the problem disappeared. Then I started " MenuCalendarClock for iCal", which I normally use, and the problem resurfaced again. So it seems that it is a X11.app and MenuCalendarClock conflict.

And one more detail. Option key does not do it all the time - Command key, however, does it.

Just one more detail. Enable key equivalents under X11 must be checked. In my case, the "keyboard freeze" is only seen in X11 applications, such as xterm and rxvt. Other Mac OSX applications are not affected.

I'm holding option, command, and sometimes both while clicking all over the menu bar and I'm not seeing any problem =(

Jeremy,
I just did a bit more investigation. It occurs if just click on the menubar item (while holding the option/command keys) but don't select any item from the pulldown menus. I can also get the keyboard working again by pressing option/command keys second time. It affects X11, Applications, Edit, Window, and Help, not blank space. It also affects a menubar item called "caffeine" if I start it up and try to reach it's Preferences (which requires pressing the command key). Caffeine is affected only if X11.app is the top application running.
