It probably execed the xterm...
The full login command is
/usr/bin/login -fp richard /bin/sh -c /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm
/bin/sh appears to be bash, but it's not the same as /bin/bash and it doesn't run either .bashrc or .bash_login. Presumably it's bash compiled in standard-Posix mode, or something like that.
