[system log deleted] I have seen the same condition momentarily. Actually, I believe it continued for a while my machine was left unattended; when I came back I found it very hot with the fan running full speed. It did not happen again after I had rebooted the machine. Here's a few hours' worth of system log before the shutdown. It's a bit simpler than Chirstof's; it also shows an xkb error at the start, although a different one. It had a couple of xterms open, and maybe gimp, if I recall correctly, but I didn't touch them. There is probably nothing relevant in the log, but just in case, here it is: Dec 7 11:27:33 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: DarwinPressModifierKey bad keycode: key=7 Dec 7 11:28:40: --- last message repeated 1 time --- Dec 7 11:27:54 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 5, socket fd = 16 Dec 7 11:29:24: --- last message repeated 1 time --- Dec 7 11:29:19 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 7, socket fd = 18 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 8, socket fd = 19 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 9, socket fd = 20 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 10, socket fd = 21 Dec 7 12:16:39: --- last message repeated 3 times --- Dec 7 12:16:39 i hdiejectd[2013]: running Dec 7 11:27:33 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: DarwinPressModifierKey bad keycode: key=7 Dec 7 11:28:40: --- last message repeated 1 time --- Dec 7 11:27:54 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 5, socket fd = 16 Dec 7 11:29:24: --- last message repeated 1 time --- Dec 7 11:29:19 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 7, socket fd = 18 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 8, socket fd = 19 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 9, socket fd = 20 Dec 7 11:29:20 i [0x0-0x10010].org.x.X11[125]: AllocNewConnection: client index = 10, socket fd = 21 Dec 7 11:57:14 i [0x0-0x45045].com.Google.GoogleEarthPlus[1981]: Intrinsic Alchemy v3.1 Beta-0329 (Dynamic/Release) Dec 7 11:57:14 i [0x0-0x45045].com.Google.GoogleEarthPlus[1981]: Built by google on Sat Mar 29 11:01:41 PDT 2008 Dec 7 11:57:15 i [0x0-0x45045].com.Google.GoogleEarthPlus[1981]: INFO: Using igOglVisualContext. I have seen the same condition momentarily.
There's nothing suspicious in your system log. A trace of the X11 process could help out here.

You mean something like strace, or should I build it with symbols and run it in gdb? I caught it in this condition once again this morning, after the system woke up and swapped in the existing X11 process. I just shut the lid yesterday with X11 running (it was running fine then); today I opened the lid and saw this. Restarting X11 didn't help; it started up with the same problem. The condition really has something to do with it being idle. I watched: if it is displaced by other processes while idle, the CPU usage goes down from 100% to anywhere between 30 and 60%; better yet, any activity in any X11 window brings it down to 2-3%. The effect disappears after a system restart. I just tried to see if I could cause it to misbehave by putting my mac to sleep, but a few short sleep-wake cycles didn't do it. Maybe it needs a more substantial clock mismatch to trigger this, if the clock has anything to do with it. I will keep watching it during my normal work cycle. The question is: what's the right way to trace it when I see it again. Obviously, I can't run the whole session in gdb. But when I see it spin, can I connect gdb to it and find out at least where it spins (if not what causes it). Alternatively, is there a way to make it dump a more verbose log? Thanks, --Gene
Actually, all I was referring to was the trace command: $ trace <pid> Or you can do it from Activity Monitor.app On Dec 8, 2008, at 03:28, Gene Selkov wrote:

You don't mean "dtrace", perchance? I couldn't find "trace" anywhere, but dtrace seems to be good for the job. I am still running rc3, and haven't had that problem with high idle anymore since I reported it last week. Nor did I have any other problems, but I don't do anything fancy -- all I do is xterms, emacs and occasionally I run gimp, and then I don't do anything extraordinary in gimp. What would you consider to be "serious pounding"? I suspect (but cannot instantly prove) that it went into that expensive loop, which I saw it do a couple times, because I put it to sleep while working with the Wacom tablet. It could be because I disconnected the tablet while it slept, or surprised it in some other way. I feel that It didn't go into that loop without me nudging it. Someone borrowed the tablet; I won't get it back until next week. If anyone has a similar tablet (if it matters, mine is Bamboo One), could you please verify that your X survives "accidental" disconnects of the tablet wire -- in the middle of a live session, or during sleep? When are you planning to get it out the door? --Gene

Sorry, I meant sample, but had trace on the brain.
If anyone has a similar tablet
<snip/> We do nothing at the device level for tablets. We just receive NSTablet events and handle them... so I don't think it has anything to do with disconnecting the tablet (or if it is, then the issue isn't in X11.app)...
When are you planning to get it out the door?
"When it's done" ;) ... Hopefully when I resolve the issues that have come up in 2.3.2_rc4 (one hang and one crash reported)...
