Ah... hmm... yes, try disabling KDE and just using quartz-wm. Does it work in that case?
Jeremy, I disabled KDE it worked immediately :-) then I opened the KDE control center and changed the rate from 25 to 11.3 (I remember you had something like this set on your system) - and that solved the problem.
