The original one form /usr/X11R6/bin works. With my German keyboard layout the alt/Option key does not seem to work. []|\{}~ do not exist. In GNU Emacs 23.0.60 the shell does not work correctly: after a RETurn the cursor is not placed right of prompt but is left at the left end or beginning of the line, i.e., "before" the cursor.
That's probably a problem with either your TERM
