Hi X11 fans, I've just updated XQuartz 2.7.5_rc1. This release focuses on a few key issues that have been brought up over the past couple months. Please give this release a try if you have been experiencing any of the following problems: * Deadlock running wine * Needlessly switching to discreet graphics * Distorted windows in some applications (like Cadence) on Mountain Lion Full release notes are available on the wiki: https://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X112.7.5 Or you can just grab the installer here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/downloads/SL/XQuartz-2.7.5_rc1.dmg Thanks, and please report any issues. --Jeremy

On Snow Leopard this version and all its precursors have one handicap: when I use display from ImageMagick it cannot display XPM or PNG images with transparency (transparently. Instead a checker board is used. On Tger, PPC, I can see transparancy… (and maybe also on Leopard, but to check this I need to wait until tomorrow, until the compilations have finished) Why is the modern version less capable? -- Greetings Pete A blizzard is when it snows sideways.

Can you give me a more specific example? Please provide me with the png and the command line you're using to display it with ImageMagick. The way I'm working around the issue with 15bit visuals in Mountain Lion is to just remove them from the list of supported visuals, so it's possible that other applications are going down different codepaths when there are no 15bit visuals available. --Jeremy
I don't think the checker board you are seeing is a problem with XQuartz. ImageMagick used to display like other viewers, but more recent (past 5 years or so) versions of ImageMagick now put a checkerboard background over the transparent parts of images when viewed with the display program. My guess is that you have an older version of ImageMagick on your ppc system, Martin On Dec 25, 2012, at 10:56 PM, Jeremy Huddleston Sequoia wrote:

Sorry for the late reply, I was hunting bugs in ImageMagick and other things… I have on PPC Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.11, Build 8S165, PPC 7447A/CPU-Typ: PowerPC G4 (1.1), PowerBook5,5) ImageMagick-6.8.1-4 installed (and also older versions). (On PPC Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5.8, Build 9L31a, I'll have it – tomorrow, local time. But this will be soon.) The used versions of Imagemagick for the test were: /sw/bin/display -version (Fink, local package) Version: ImageMagick 6.7.8-0 2012-07-16 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2012 ImageMagick Studio LLC Features: OpenMP HDRI /opt/local/bin/display -version (MacPorts) Version: ImageMagick 6.8.0-2 2012-11-17 Q16 http://www.imagemagick.org Copyright: Copyright (C) 1999-2012 ImageMagick Studio LLC Features: They identify'd the PNG image as: etc/images/splash.png PNG 275x188 275x188+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 37.5KB 0.000u 0:00.000 (Fink) etc/images/splash.png PNG 275x188 275x188+0+0 8-bit sRGB 37.5KB 0.000u 0:00.009 (MacPorts) Both show in XQuartz 2.7.2 (xorg-server 1.12.99.0) the PNG image on a medium grey background. This week. With XQuartz 2.7.2 (xorg-server 1.12.99.0). I have an earlier screenshot with unknown version of X server. Here the display windows show real transparency: It was most probably displayed by the MacPorts ImageMagick (the left two display are from Fink; the two SVG displays show the one bug in ImageMagic: when librsvg-2 is used, then ImageMagick cannot determine the correct size, which deviates only by pixels from that of the PNG image; the second bug becomes obvious on PPC hardware: false colours when used with librsvg-2, black&white only when using its own means). On Leopard with XQuartz 2.6.3 (xorg-server 1.10.3) I can display the transparent PNG and XPM images. It does not work instantly, the windows flicker maybe ten times until they become stable. Later, after some compilation in Emacsen has finished, I'll try the same tests with XQuartz 2.7.3. On intel Mac OS X 10.6.8 with XQuartz 2.7.4 (xorg-server 1.13.0) I cannot see any transparency, only the checker board. -- Mit friedvollen Grüßen Pete Inside every small problem is a large problem struggling to get out. – Second Law of Blissful Ignorance
On PPC Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5.8, Build 9L31a, XQuartz 2.7.4 (xorg-server 1.13.0) shows transparency as well. Again, it takes some flickering until the window becomes stable. -- Greetings <] Pete o __o |__ o recumbo ___o /I -\<, |o \ -\),-% ergo sum! ___/\ /\___./ \___...O/ O____.....`-O-'-()--o_________________
