Quitting XQuartz 2.7.0 (xorg-server 1.11.2) stalls Mac OS X 10.6.8
Hello! Quitting XQuartz 2.7.0 (xorg-server 1.11.2), installed via its update service, on Mac OS X 10.6.8 repeatedly stalls the system. Only the cursor can be moved, the digital clock in the menu bar has stopped. The good side is that it could not damage the file system (yet). CPU hardware: Sandy Bridge. -- Greetings Pete "Debugging? Klingons do not debug! Our software does not coddle the weak."
That sounds like a video card panic, and should have nothing to do with anything changer in Xquartz. I did minor start/run xterm/quit testing on SL, and I never saw that. Can you provide more details, like a system log? Can you ssh into the system when it is in this state? On Nov 24, 2011, at 8:29, Peter Dyballa <Peter_Dyballa@Web.DE> wrote:

There seems to be nothing logged, but I'll the logs again. When I want to repeat the failure on purpose it works OK, i.e., no stall. I'll try at daylight again! -- Greetings Pete (: _ / __ - - _/ \__/_/ - - (´`) (´`) - - `´ `´

Here are excerpts from system.log file. The message "Zeile 36" comes from ~/.login. The problem with .app-defaults/XTerm-color, a sym-link, is fixed since a few minutes. Does xrdb use XUSERFILESEARCHPATH or XAPPLRESDIR? ~/Library/Preferences/org.macosforge.xquartz.X11.plist had misleadingly "login_shell" = "/bin/sh"; I added the pair "dpi" = 133; because 96 DPI are assumed? I see nothing in here to indicate that your system is locked, or that X11 is somehow responsible. Did you follow my other suggestions (like sshing in)? Also, 2.3.6 is quite old. On Nov 26, 2011, at 13:48, Peter Dyballa wrote:

I had no chance to reproduce this stall again (sshing in works). Maybe it was a Thanksgiving Egg... Earlier that day I had installed with Software Update a few updates, including two which patched the firmware to better support Thunderbolt (MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.3, MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5 + iDVD 7.1.2, iWeb Update 3.0.4, iMovie 9.0.4, EPSON Printer Software Update 2.9, Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.9, iPhoto Update 9.2.1, iTunes 10.5.1).
Also, 2.3.6 is quite old.
I cited this version from /usr/X11 only because it reports to use a 96 DPI instead of the real 133 DPI setting. The stalls happened with XQuartz 2.7.0 (xorg-server 1.11.2). -- Greetings <] Pete o __o |__ o recumbo ___o /I -\<, |o \ -\),-% ergo sum! ___/\ /\___./ \___...O/ O____.....`-O-'-()--o_________________

Success! This time with new MacPorts' XQuartz 2.7.0 (xorg-server 1.11.99.1). I could login in via ssh and then invoke 'sudo reboot'. Around the time of launching X11 I see messages from sandboxd with /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/cvmsComp_x86_64. I also had another "nice" issue. When I logged off because Onyx had shut down some applications to do fsck and then tried to login in, the new screen with the login tool was not the full screen but maybe 80 %, starting in the upper left corner. The new login session was also that size. Logging out again fixed this (while I hoped to see 80 % of 80 %). -- Greetings Pete Some day we may discover how to make magnets that can point in any direction.

I'd say file a radar with the system.log which includes those cvms error messages... it is not an XQuartz bug.
