I took the work-around suggested in the discussion list of that bug -
which was to import the certificate and mark it as trusted. Re-loading
the calendar causes Thunderbird/Lightning's
exclamation-mark-in-a-yellow-triangle to go away, giving one hope that
everything is going to work. Alas, when it was started,
Thunderbird/Lightning wrote:

to the terminal from which I started it. Odd that Evolution should work
under these circumstances, but that Thunderbird/Lightning on Linux and
iCal 4.0.2 (the latest) on Mac OS X 10.6 should not.
