I'm getting that same 404 error occasionally. Haven't seen the second one though.

You're right, there doesn't seem to be a way to search the mailing list archives. I've been using Google and scoping the search to the mailing list archives. For example: 
caldav site:http://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/calendarserver-users/

... seems to work.
