My own messup (foo Vs. fooo) helped me settle this thing once and for all: the branch dir needs to exist prior to copying the base dir into it, otherwise only the *contents* of base and not the dir itself will be copied, which breaks selfupdate (again, the latter should be fixed). C.f. my own mistake when first creating the release_1_4 branch.
