Apart from being deprecated for a very long time now, SystemStarter is a super naive start/stop framework--it can do things on demand since it usually is just a kill `cat thing.pid` script.

> SystemStarter can't start programs on demand, can it? I thought only launchd could do that, and that SystemStarter required a system restart.
