 I had the same problem.  Turning off optimization provided quick
 compilation.  /usr/bin/gcc --version reports:  powerpc-apple-
 darwin8-gcc-4.0.0 (GCC) 4.0.0 20041026 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 4061).
