Comment (by clarke at mis.mpg.de):

 worked great for me, but I had to install it with -f to overwrite
 texlive's version of preview-latex, and after installation had to run
 "sudo mktexlsr" to make preview-latex work in emacs.

 maybe in the messages at the end of installation, one should also add a
 comment about adding "(load "preview-latex.el" nil t t)" to .emacs in
 order to make preview-latex work.  took me a while to figure that one out,
 as in other (non-macports) installations i've had, preview-latex was
 loaded automatically.
