 As originally proposed, this suggesstion is a non-starter...
 It would be rather unusual for one port to disappear and to change the
 name of the "perl5.10" port (odd as it is).

 However, changing the "default perl" to Perl 5.10 is certainly doable even
 if annoying due to all "port:perl5.8"

 The other misunderstanding is that perl5.10 is maintained, I'll clear that
 up.
