 Can you still reproduce this?  configure should be stripping extra slashes
 these days, according to the
 [http://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/html_node/Installation-
 Directory-Variables.html#Installation-Directory-Variables documentation].
 My test failed to reproduce this.
