 Indeed my perl was broken. `otool` revealed that it was linked with
 /usr/'''local'''/lib/libgcc_s, which had since disappeared. Still
 mystified why this didn't cause any problems when running configure
 manually. But rebuilding perl seems to have done the trick. Thanks!
