 I'm curious if this will end up being a problem with the MacPorts version.

 I'm going to mimic your available packages and try rebuilding.  If it
 again works for me this points to either incorrectly built packages at
 your end or an actual MacPorts change in behavior between the versions (I
 use trunk).

 Would you be interested in activating archive mode and I send you pre-
 built binaries of packages to try building against?
