 okay... fixed it by doing the following:

 1. manually downloaded <patch-configure.diff> from this ticket:
 http://trac.macports.org/ticket/16101, it's the last attachment.

 2. did this:

 $ cd $(port dir ffmpeg)
 $ sudo cp ~/Desktop/patch-configure.diff files/

 3. port install ffmpeg now works.
