 I had the same problem as melfar with the METAFONT, but it went away by
 uninstalling

  * texlive_base,
  * texlive_texmf-full, and
  * texlive_texmf-minimal

 and installing them again. (MacPorts 1.8.1 on SL, latest port repo with
 selfupdate.)
