 Thanks for that.  Unfortunately, the first site may fail on my side due to
 a proxy (though others don't fail usually).  I certainly can't download
 from FTP sites directly.  What about the other sites in the list?

 I'd rather not do this unless absolutely necessary.  I was just saying
 that in a fit of desperation I'd made an attempt to hack the port file,
 which probably isn't a good idea.  But thanks for the pointer.  I may end
 up doing it anyway, esp. if it takes a while for this to be fixed.
