 Do not upgrade. Do this:

 cd in ${prefix}/share/macports/Tcl/port1.0/
 open the file portconfigure.tcl
 search for the line : macports-gcc-4.4 { set name "MacPorts gcc 4.4" }
 insert just under it the line : macports-gcc-4.5 { set name "MacPorts gcc
 4.5" }

 save and try again.
