 AFAICT, the failure occurs when running Snow Leopard (for which the
 default compilation architecture is 64-bit) on a 64-bit Mac that uses the
 32-bit kernel (like my MacBookPro3,1). curl and all other ports that can
 be built 64-bit will have been built 64-bit, but because virtualbox does
 things special, it wants to build 32-bit on 32-bit kernels. Again, the
 curl error message should be translated as: "the architecture for which
 you built curl does not match the architecture for which you're building
 whatever you're building now" (i.e. virtualbox).
