Comment:

 Given that gtk3 isn't backwards-compatible with gtk2, this seems like a
 pretty serious obstacle to moving ports to gtk3: most people who use them
 will probably also have some gtk2 ports installed.

 gtk2 and gtk3 are designed to be able to be installed independently. The
 only conflict I see is on $prefix/bin/gtk-update-icon-cache, which would
 be easy enough to fix by renaming it to gtk-update-icon-cache-3.0 or
 something. Is there more of a conflict than that?
