 Thank you for the suggestion.
 I did try port selfupdate, clean and install flex - but to no avail.
 Indeed it appears I cannot install anything and always get an error
 message reporting that a directory could not be found not matter what I
 try to install. I have only just installed Macports and installed it with
 --with-install-user=id -un --with-install-group=id -gn could this be
 causing the problem. I do not have root or sudo rights. Also completely
 removed Macports and then reinstalled but nothing changed.
