 No, I haven't. And I don't think I can perform this test because so many
 packages depend on that one. How could it be removed then?

 There is one hint: Before, I had the previous version of ncurses,  @5.7_1,
 installed. Since my disk has only a few GB of free space left I deleted
 the old version already. (I know of its existence because I still have the
 little file with the list of old installed packages to be removed.) The
 update from 5.7_1 to 5.8_0 presumingly left the aforementioned files, so
 that the update failed. The quite large
 /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_devel_ncurses/main.log
 file does not record any rm command, so I can't tell which files were
 removed, which files could not be removed (because they were not in the
 [AELMNPQX] directories), and which were left (because they were not in the
 [aelmnpqx] directories).
