 Based on what Andy said I tried the following and it worked (on OSX
 10.6.8, XCode 4.0.2):
 {{{
 sudo port install mplayer configure.compiler=gcc-4.2
 }}}

 PS: Can't this be done automatically by MacPorts somehow? So people don't
 have to remember/locate this bug.
