 @raimue - yes, Xcode 4.2 still includes gcc 4.2.1.

 I went ahead and replaced "clang" with "llvm-gcc-4.2" in
 portconfigure::configure_get_default_compiler.  Wish there was a
 ~/.macportsrc or somesuch where I could set configure.compiler=gcc, though
 ...
