Comment:

I don't see anywhere in #28759 where anyone asked for gcc variants to be
removed. I only see [comment:ticket:28759:1 my comment] which said "gcc45
should only be the default variant if the user has not already chosen the
gcc44 variant". I was referring to the line "default_variants +gcc45"
which would have caused an error message for users who requested the
 +gcc44 variant. See wiki:PortfileRecipes#default_variants and
wiki:PortfileRecipes#gcc for the proper recipe. I also said "Fewer
variants is better" but I was not intending for that remark to be
interpreted as applying to the gcc variants, but rather the other
variants. I would not suggest removing gcc variants; rather I would
advocate adding a gcc47 variant to those already there, so that users can
use the latest stable version. Mixing different gcc versions in different
ports can sometimes lead to problems, and gcc45 is the default version of
gcc that we use in other ports at this time, so certainly at least the
 gcc45 variant should be retained.
