three forcing the use of gcc45 and get it working. Not sure how all these
things got out of alignment (too bad there isn't a better mechanism to
keep gcc consistent), but thanks so much for your help.
There is a way. In your /opt/local/etc/macports/variants.conf file add
{{{+gcc45}}} or whatever desired gcc version you want.
