#36520: rb-rails: doesn't install rails
------------------------------+--------------------------------
Reporter: Deil.Christoph@… | Owner: macports-tickets@…
Type: defect | Status: new
Priority: Normal | Milestone:
Component: ports | Version: 2.1.2
Keywords: | Port: rb-rails
------------------------------+--------------------------------
I installed the `rb-rails` port without problems, but when I try to issue
a rails command I get this message:
{{{
$ rails
Rails is not currently installed on this system. To get the latest
version, simply type:
$ sudo gem install rails
You can then rerun your "rails" command.
}}}
Why was the rails not found and I have to re-install it via {{{sudo gem
install rails}}}?
So I followed the advice and installed rails via `gem`:
{{{
$ sudo gem install rails

Building native extensions. This could take a while...
Depending on your version of ruby, you may need to install ruby rdoc/ri
data:
<= 1.8.6 : unsupported
= 1.8.7 : gem install rdoc-data; rdoc-data --install
= 1.9.1 : gem install rdoc-data; rdoc-data --install
>= 1.9.2 : nothing to do! Yay!

Note that some of these gems had already been installed as {{{rb-rails}}}
dependencies via Macports:
{{{
$ port deps rb-rails
Full Name: rb-rails @2.3.5_0
Library Dependencies: ruby, rb-rubygems, rb-rake, rb-activesupport, rb-
activerecord, rb-actionpack, rb-actionmailer, rb-activeresource, rb-
sqlite3
}}}
Still rails is not found:
{{{
$ rails
Rails is not currently installed on this system. To get the latest
version, simply type:
$ sudo gem install rails
You can then rerun your "rails" command.
}}}
Here's some more info on what is on my PATH:
{{{
$ ruby --version
ruby 1.8.7 (2012-06-29 patchlevel 370) [i686-darwin12]
$ which rails
/opt/local/bin/rails
$ which gem
/opt/local/bin/gem
$ gem --version
1.3.7
}}}
With other software Macports has worked very well for me. Now I wanted to
give ruby and rails a try, but installation (as a newbie that doesn't know
about version differences and where gems are installed and found ...) with
Macports has been disappointing. See #36518 and #36519 for the problems I
ran into trying to install rb19-rails.
