 just to add, I recently had this very issue with sw_vers hanging when
 attempting to develop a script to update MacPorts via a cron. I have a
 script that works fine, and was running ok when installed as root's
 crontab, but then one day got stuck whilst updating llvm 3.0. I didn't
 have time to dig deeper at the time, so shelved the idea, but reading this
 I suspect it was the same issue as 'su -' versus sudo.
