Comment:

 While tracing this we also found #37936, which partially caused this
 problem, because it did allow the installation of a binary-incompatible
 package from packages.macports.org even with the correct
 require_active_variants statement. The patch merely automatically selects
 the correct version instead of deferring the fix to the user.
