 this problem is fixed upstream with this commit:

 https://github.com/git/git/commit/482456a414d69d8c44b92bbf73eb4ee53b5d8ab9

 Problem is known in debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
 bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=801784

 The problem is still in version 2.6.4
