 Hmmm, didn't run into that particular issue; KDE4 ports seem to be fine in
 that aspect.

 Are you following my layout, or just dumping everything into a private
 prefix as mcalhoun did for qt5-mac? Moving the Qt plugins directory from
 where it was might explain the phonon issue, and could well be what made
 me look once more and decide there was no point in changing install
 locations that were already compatible with concurrent Qt 4,5
 installation.
