 On my system, the line printed after this line is:

 {{{
 checking for Java compiler... javac -target 1.1 -source 1.3
 }}}

 Perhaps you don't have Java installed (it's no longer part of OS X) or
 perhaps you have an old version. Perhaps [http://java.com/ installing the
 latest Java] would help.

 I should probably prevent the gettext port from trying to use Java. That
 enhancement request is #48651.
