 OK, I get it now. Perhaps it's something about this specific machine then.
 I don't know what 3rd party software would interfere with @loader_path --
 I have Parallels installed. Some other stuff, the usual mix that
 accumulates over time. Nothing else down in the innards.

 I have another machine that can run SnowLeopard - a MacPro 5,1 - I'll
 install clang-3.8 on that, and see if that does the same thing.
