 Between this ticket and a discussion on the
 [https://lists.macosforge.org/pipermail/macports-
 users/2016-May/thread.html#41052 users mailing list], it seems the java
 variant is causing problems.[[BR]]
 As of r149046, it is no longer a default variant.[[BR]]
 octave uses the
 [https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/_resources/port1.0/group/java-1.0.tcl
 java PortGroup], which apparently did not work on your setup.[[BR]]
 To fix the problem, we would either need to figure out why the java
 PortGroup did not work in your case or simply reinstall octave without the
 java variant.
