 Prior to that point in time, `/usr/bin/as` defaulted to using `gas`.

 The errors started showing up when they flipped to defaulting to `clang`
 as assembler, and then only in `i386` code generation.

 Here is what appears to be the bug report in the llvm tree, but
 unfortunately there is no reference to any single commit that fixed it
 <https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7635>.
