 Hey -- good news. The new popt installed without issues on 10.5 PPC using
 gcc7:

 $ port -v installed popt
 The following ports are currently installed:
   popt @1.16_0 platform='darwin 9' archs='ppc'
 date='2020-06-23T23:42:55-0700'
   popt @1.18_0 (active) platform='darwin 9' archs='ppc'
 date='2020-09-28T17:18:29-0700'
 }}}

 So no need to worry about holding it back.
