 I just submitted https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/21775,
 which doesn't fix this problem as described, but does roll back the port
 to 1.0.13 on 10.4, which fixes the immediate problem.  There has yet to be
 a newer version that works on 10.4, in spite of claims to the contrary.
