 I think I'm going to tentatively put this one down to user error.  I just
 updated my system, and now everything works.  Looking back through the
 update list, I see xcode tools 10.1 followed by xcode tools 8.2, which s
 the el cap version for some reason, and then with the last update, back to
 10.1.  So my bugged compilation seems to be caused by using teh el cap
 xcode tools on high sierra, i think, maybe.  In any case, "it works now".
