 This may have been self-inflicted. My mac was "imported" from an x86_64
 mac and it looks like there might have been some x86_64 libraries around,
 though I thought I'd cleaned them. I removed macports completely and the
 build process now seems to complete so I can only assume this was user
 error.

 Logging showed incompatible architecture libraries. (I should have saved
 this but didn't).
 So apologies for the noise.
