 I was just doing a normal selfupdate and  got this (or a very similar)
 error also, but in conjunction with updating gstreamer1-gst-plugins-bad. I
 solved it by changing variants on gtk3 and webkit2gtk to +quartz, and that
 fixed my issue with the configure failure. This happened on two systems,
 one running High Sierra and one running Mojave.

 I use X only very occasionally as a platform, and use XQuartz to support
 jupyter and similar stuff. I don't know if I will face any consequences
 from changing the variant. If there is interest, I can try installing the
 +x11 variant and try to read or submit the log.
