Comment (by ryandesign):

 Likely the wrong file got downloaded because the listed homepage /
 master_sites location is no longer valid; that domain is owned by someone
 else now and redirects to a Vietnamese web server that returns an HTML
 file for every URL:

 {{{
 % sudo port fetch --no-mirrors GNUMail-Aqua
 Password:
 --->  Fetching distfiles for GNUMail-Aqua
 --->  Attempting to fetch GNUMail-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz from http://www
 .collaboration-world.com/gnumail.data/releases/Stable/
 --->  Attempting to fetch Pantomime-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz from http://www
 .collaboration-world.com/pantomime.data/releases/Stable/
 % sudo port checksum GNUMail-Aqua
 --->  Verifying checksums for GNUMail-Aqua
 Error: Checksum (rmd160) mismatch for GNUMail-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz
 Error: Checksum (sha256) mismatch for GNUMail-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz
 Error: Checksum (rmd160) mismatch for Pantomime-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz
 Error: Checksum (sha256) mismatch for Pantomime-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz
 ***
 The non-matching file appears to be HTML. See this page for possible
 reasons
 for the checksum mismatch:
 <https://trac.macports.org/wiki/MisbehavingServers>
 ***
 The file has been moved to: /opt/local/var/macports/distfiles/GNUMail-
 Aqua/Pantomime-1.2.0pre3.tar.gz.html
 }}}

 It looks like the correct web site is now https://www.nongnu.org/gnustep-
 nonfsf/gnumail/ from which newer versions are available. Updating to one
 of those might fix #51527 as well.
