 Umm, upstream published versions of that patch for all 3.x branches.
 There was also no rush to apply that patch at all, since upstream deemed
 it too low-severity to justify new releases.  Since the effect is similar
 to a small memory leak, seeing an actual problem from it requires a server
 uptime which is humongous on 32-bit builds and astronomical on 64-bit
 builds.

 Although not patching 3.1.5 at all would have been fine in this case,
 patching it without a revbump is inconsistent, so I just submitted PR
 23478 to fix that.

 Fixing the bug would certainly be desirable, though it's a nontrivial
 amount of work.
