Setting default values for environment variables

Hi!

I'm looking for the best way to mimic on MacOS X a Linux handy
feature for setting the default values (system-wide, for all users)
for environment variables. In Linux, I need just to create *.sh and
*.csh files with the environment variable definition on the /etc/
profile.d/ directory. I need similar functionality for a postflight
script for a MacPorts package (or for the post-destroot phase). Your
suggestions are most welcome.

Cheers,

Paulo
